I just ran Windows XP SP3 updates that kicked in to be started yesterday..since the update, i am unable to launch Chrome. Well, first i thought i messed up something after i bought my new HDMI Gateway 22″ monitor, and then maybe not!

Even though i click on the shortcut/application that should launch Chrome, there is no process that runs on its name….then a little permutations and combinations of killing few processes worked!!

If you kill the process named “citivan.exe” (leave ctfmon.exe alone!), Chrome will launch normally. I am typing onto my blog from Chrome, so it works! Oh well, sneaky ways to chop off non-Microsoft products huh?

I am taking the course “Advanced Databases and Datawarehousing” this semester. As a part of the course, i am supposed to work with either oracle or MYSQL or any other equivalent db.

Instead of working in the labs at the campus ( well, i need to apply and get a valid login from the IT guy at UofL, then take time out of my 20 hours/week schedule, plus swimming , plus taking care of my new kitty, plus hello its snowing, how the deuce do you expect me to go to campus.. and yeah, did i mention i DONT have a car?), i would rather take time to install one that i like on my super hot laptop!

I need to post more pics of my laptop and my kitty .. uh well. so here the first step towards installation of MYSQL.

step1: Choose which db software you want to install. I chose MYSQL because, well i played with Oracle 7.3 when i was a kid(well, 4 years ago i was a kid).

Step2: google “MYSQL APACHE PHP all in one installation”. Well, what do you know, the first of the results leads to XAMPP. OFCOURSE!!

Step3: INSTALL XAMPP

Step4: Need to post more on followups!

ADIOS!

All hell arise when the desktop is not responding!!

The hourglass icon of the mouse, without anything responding is very frustrating and very common. The annoying part is that the clicks of 10 minutes ago work now and it goes on not responding…

well, restarting is an option, but really! who wants to restart?

So what to do? Get more frustrated?

Oh well! If you want a solution, that might work most of the times, here it is:

This is only when ctrl + alt + del works!

If it takes 5 minutes, then so be it, atleast you wont have to shutdown!!

STEP#1: get the TASK MANAGER up

HOW?

Try One of the following:

WAY-1: ctrl + alt + del

WAY-2: ctrl + shift + Esc

STEP#2: Highlight explorer.exe

HOW?

Try One of the following:

(Make sure Windows Task Manager is Active, Click on Processes Tab )

Press the key ‘e’ on the keyboard till explorer.exe is highlighted

Click on Image name to sort the processes by alphabetical order, then scroll to processes starting with ‘e’

STEP#3: End explorer.exe

Make sure that the explorer.exe is highlighted, and then click on “End Process” button.

Click on YES button for the WARNING popup.

FINALLY: Start explorer.exe afresh

HOW?

(Make sure Windows Task Manager is Active, Click on Applications Tab )

Press the Button ‘New Task’

Type in “explorer.exe” (without quotes) into the popup

Click on ‘ok’ button

ENJOY!
