Why did gmail Leave out “READ RECEIPT” feature?

I know read Receipt feature is kinda annoying to a lot of people.
But a discrete one is my favourite. UofL uses Novel Groupwise and the Read-Reciept feature deosnt ask the intended recepient to click in a dialog(which is really annoying!!).
This happens in Lotus Notes and few other mail-apps. But i like the silent one.
There are a lot of times when i need to know if the mail sent is opened or not!! With this feature, I know what i need to know – whether the mail opened or not. The intended receiver doesn’t need to know that im anxiously waiting for the mail to be read!
Im sure every one has an occasion or two to need this feature. It is also less obtrusive than a phone call !!
If you are the person sending a rather critical piece of information via email, it is nice to know that the recipient did indeed get your communication and that it did not get lost in cyberspace. Often, I don’t need a response right away from the emails I send, but it is comforting knowing that the email was received.
Ofcourse it has to separated from work and play. Now how annoying would it be if your girlfriend sends you email with “Read Receipt” ?????
I think this will be a cool add-on if it doesn’t involve the annoying-clicking-process from the reciever. Wonder when google will add this!
