All BIG things start small!

Today ive been on the net trying to learn ways to improve, conquer the subjects of my graduate studies. I came across the site : MathWorld.com. Simply impressive.

Ive found the stuff for statistics, discrete mathematics, Applied mathematics, all at one site. And the way it is organized, i dont think i gotta google much of what i need anymore. With pagerank of 9/10, this site is very informative. The MathWorld Classroom, which provides a set of pop-up “capsule summaries” is commendable.

More interesting is the background of the site, and its journey. It was shutdown for almost a year in an interesting lawsuit, isnt it always the case with established sites? They are always sued at one point or another!

The site belongs to Eric Weissstein. Listen to this!

” When Eric Weisstein was a forgetful freshman at Cornell University, he began jotting down useful facts in an effort to better remember fine details. These notes covered everything from music to math, from the meaning of the bass clef to the number of times physicist John Bardeen won the Nobel prize. Weisstein scribbled through his master’s and doctoral studies in planetary astronomy. By 1995, his math notes had become the basis of a popular Web site dubbed Eric’s Treasure Trove of Math.

Figuring he had plenty of solid material, Weisstein asked a number of publishers if they might be interested in publishing his math encyclopedia. Technical publisher CRC Press took the bait and published the 1,969-page, Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics in 1998.”

As i said - All big things start small.
In this case, it starts with a forgetful freshman making notes!
